Aarktica - Bleeding Light
CD Album 2005 | Darla
8 tracks, 46 minutes
$12 ($18 international)
Aarktica's Bleeding Light is an intimate epic which takes raw feelings and lets the music flow naturally from them. It's a genuinely exciting album, one that matches emotion with experimentation in powerful ways.
~ Erasing Clouds

Supported by an ensemble of horns, strings and percussion, Bleeding Light is it’s own distinct hybrid of dark, dissonant free jazz, electro-acoustic drone pop, and shoegaze glimmer, all largely centered around North Indian raga structures.

"Why isn’t Jon DeRosa’s work as Aarktica mentioned in the same breath as Stars of the Lid or Eluvium when discussing ambient/drone music?"
~ Ian Mathers, PopMatters

Aarktica: Live at KUCI Aarktica
Live at KUCI 6/15/05
MP3 EP 2009 | Silber 083
5 tracks, 31 minutes
download zip file | Archive.org page

After the release of Bleeding Light, Aarktica did a short West Coast tour with most of the full live band. During this trip the band was invited to perform live on the air at KUCI in Irvine, CA. These tracks, recorded live, capture the rawness, tension & dynamics of Bleeding Light-era Aarktica & represent the only live shows done outside of New York City for this album. A very different animal than the on-record Aarktica most know, the live shows of this era featured the virtuosity of free jazz greats Mike Pride & James Duncan on drums & trumpet, respectively Just listen to the drum breaks toward the end of “A Shadow Knife,” & the trumpet solos on “OJ Gude.”

Aarktica - No Solace in Sleep
CD Album 2000 | Silber 012
8 tracks, 64 minutes
$12 ($18 international, $5 download (256 kbps, ~113 megs))
Think of this CD as the aural score for the aurora borealis, each note a shimmer display of color; the tones as waves of light...Simply captivating.
~ Mass Transfer

Debut album of Jon DeRosa’s ambient guitar drone project Aarktica. A continuation of the sounds started by Ligetti and followed through by Glenn Branca, Robert Fripp, Brian Eno, Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, Lycia, lovesliescrushing, & Flying Saucer Attack. Still one of our best sellers years later.

Aarktica - ...or you could just go through your whole life and be happy anyway (Bliss Out v. 18)
CD Album 2002 | Darla 121
7 tracks, 41 minutes
$12
The release of this caused a bit of a ruckus as Aarktica left the soundscape territory & performed a few "songs."  Another great release from one of our favorite bands.

Aarktica - Pure Tone Audiometry
CD Album 2003 | Silber 026
7 tracks, 45 minutes
$5 download (256 kbps, ~79 megs)
Aarktica's songs are extended reveries, built on loops of guitars and drums and occasional voices. The musical elements hover and circle, float by or bristle with distortion as the songs drift through serenity and trouble.
~ Jon Pareles, New York Times

Pure Tone Audiometry is Aarktica's most involved work yet, approaching the balance between "drone" and "song." Although the overall tone is consistent and dreamlike, the content within is as varied as DeRosa's personality, combining gentle lullabies with jagged atonalism, string trios with white noise guitars, and feverish percussion overtop sedate drones.

Azalia Snail: Celestial Respect Azalia Snail - Celestial Respect
CD Album 2011 | Silber 093
14 tracks, 40 minutes
$12 ($18 international, $5 download (320 kbps, ~85 megs))
For those of you who’ve read Go Ask Alice, you’ll understand when I say I wish the protagonist had been able to move past her LSD experiences in the way Azalia Snail has. Prolific Snail, named after the flowers in her parents’ yard, presents us with some somber psyche numbers featuring her multi-instrumental talents and moody vox. There are some horns on here from Taylor Wheedlin and Alex Lewis. Hear for yourself why she’s called the Space Folk Psych Queen.
~ KFJC

The queen of lo-fi space pop now has a home on Silber.  We're glad to have her here as we've been a fan of hers dating back to before Silber began.  Her music combines punk, pop, psychedia, & minimalism in her own unique vibe, just listen to the sample track & you'll see what we mean.

Azalia Snail: Neon Resistance Azalia Snail - Neon Resistance
CD Album 2018 | Silber 262
12 tracks, 39 minutes
$14 ($21 international, $10 download)
Listen on Bandcamp
“She has always written very personal songs and on her new album, Neon Resistance, that is still very much the case. Its lead track, ‘Celeste (Can You Feel It)’, is huge, an epic pop song that will ear-worm its way into your life. Let’s hope there really is that parallel universe where Azalia is a star & appreciated for producing songs like this & then lets all go live there!”
~ Stephen Rennicks, Ambient Analogue

Azalia Snail has been making her uniquely sweet, hypnotic, noise-inflected brand of pop music since the days before Nirvana broke. Her entire catalog has a spirit of timelessness where you could believe the music was rare gems from the late 1960s as well as from the 1990s when she first appeared on the scene or today. Upbeat, triumphant, & joyous – this is the true sound of resistance & it's irresistable.

Baptizer is noise & drone & power electronics & industrial & southern & anti-modern & Christian & intense.  We get it; it's not for everybody.  It's music by & for those who feel trapped in the wrong place in space & time.  A nightmare, a dream, or a world of its own.  If you can imagine Phillip K Dick & Ezra Pound & Saint Ignatius of Loyola collaborating & collaging & colliding, you won't be far off the mark.  Enter the caverns & be saved from the modern world by the hands of Baptizer.

Baptizer - Nativity Baptizer - Nativity
MP3 EP 2014 | Silber 172
2 tracks, 20 minutes
$1 download
In all likelihood, this is not what would come to mind when most people imagine religious music, yet Baptizer’s Nativity EP seems to embody many ideas and themes related to the actual birth of Christ – not the consumer-friendly Christmas holiday that we are more familiar with today. I found this to be an extremely well-crafted and almost inspiring release that prompts the listener to go on a voyage of introspection and self-discovery. Honestly, that’s about as outstanding a holiday gift as any music could provide, and I’d recommend this relatively brief EP to those willing to approach it with an open mind.

I became an instant friend to Jim Baptizer when I met him.  The Christian noise scene is all but non-existant, so it's always great to find a member of our odd little cult.  Known for caustic noise, for his five minute EP he grabbed some old four-track guitar noise he did as a teen for an especially Silbery little collection.

Jamie Barnes - The Fallen Acrobat
CD Album 2003 | Silber 029
12 tracks, 41 minutes
$12 ($18 international, $5 download (256kbps, ~76 megs))
The title track is sickeningly sweet but with a morbid edge, as the narrator falls for a girl like an acrobat who plummets from the wire. Barnes sings about her picking up his limbs and putting them back in their sockets before the vultures come and it's still the sweetest song about love I've heard this year.
~ Rob Devlin, Brainwashed

The Fallen Acrobat is the debut album by Louisville singer-songwriter Jamie Barnes. Fleshed out bedroom pop songs about the anxieties of growing up and the nostalgia of youth.

Jamie Barnes - The Recalibrated Heart
CD Album 2006 l Pink Bullet 001
10 tracks, 44 minutes
$12
Jamie Barnes' music is incredibly delicate, with a tenderness and ripe vulnerability that tears at your heart. His world is one of cautious hope and unbending faith, a landscape of barely hidden dangers tempered by the promise of better days. There's also an undeniable sadness balanced by a spiritual strength more suggested than splashed across a billboard -- it's inherent, built to last but never taken for granted.
~ Jeffrey Lee Puckett, The Courier-Journal

On his third album Jamie continues to crank out his own special brand of heartbreaking americana.

At Silber we’re pretty excited about Adventures In Love and Culture: ONCEABILITY because it is conceptually pretty much everything we’re all about, especially with the 5in5 series. Two artists living a couple thousand miles away from each other who've never met in person with very different approaches to music meet through a release on Silber (LD’s 5in5 from last year - The Just-World Phenomenon) & end up working on a release on Silber. Pushing each other out of their comfort zones to make something neither would do alone. Electronics & chaos from Bronze Eye & crafted poetic lyrical precision from LD. A soundtrack to a dream where two worlds collide like a medieval minstrel busking on a space station.

Carta: The Glass Bottom Boat Carta - The Glass Bottom Boat
CD 2007 | Resonant 026
10 tracks, 56 minutes
$12 ($18 international)
The debut effort by San Francisco's Carta, led by guitarist Kyle Monday (writer or co-writer of all the songs, and the only original bandmember left at the time of its release), finds the group well established in working in the realm of contemplative atmospherics. This isn't to say The Glass Bottom Boat is diaphanous new age or the like; rather, like many fine bands before it -- Joy Division, Low, Mogwai among others -- Carta seeks to use rock band instrumentation to emphasize reflective mood rather than simply traditional performance.
~ Ned Raggett, All Music Guide

This is the album where Carta first attracted our attention.

Carta: An Index of Birds Carta - An Index of Birds
CD 2010 | Silber 077
13 tracks, 58 minutes

This is truly an album to cherish during those quiet moments when you need to relax after a troubling day, or just want to stare at the sunset or walk through the snowfall & reminisce about the times of your life when everything was alright with the world....
~ Jeff Penczak, Foxy Digitalis

A welcome new addition to the Silber family.  Carta reminds us of a ton of stuff we like from Low to Six by Seven to Plumerai to Charles Atlas & are in the tradition of all the mid 1990s moody pop/slowcore/indie rock/post rock bands we came of age to.

Listen on Silber | Listen on Bandcamp | Listen on Spotify
For decades Chvad SB has been following his own muse, creating music that fulfills his personal interests & so he does again in his latest exploration Intone Drone. Beginning January 17, 2018 & continued for 15 hours every weeknight after 5pm EST streaming from his studio to whomever happened upon it via Shoutcast, Chvad was sculpting a new drone piece. Each passing day a new element was either introduced into, removed from or changed within the drone. Three weeks later the drone ended. Unsure at the beginning of the project how long it would last, on the 21st day it felt complete. For this release, segments of each 15 hour day were arranged to create a complete remnant for this first installment of Intone Drone. It's the mixture of meditation & sleep soundtrack you didn't realize you were looking for, because the more personal & necessary to be made music is, somehow the more universal it also is.

Irving plays his home-designed percussion megalith called "the Crutch" (a jumble of saw blade, broken cymbal, office stapler, & various other noisemakers) while hopping around in spiritual rapture and, all the while, drawing directly directly on events in the life of Christ. This could be a genuinely fascinating, groundbreaking mix of influences, and the best on The Separation of Church and Hate prove that religious conviction and the experiments of Irving's heroes (Throbbing Gristle, This Heat) can coexist with surprising fluidity.

Dan West’s ‘Expression Compression’ is a joyous mess. The songs are long gone. Pieces are out of control. Noise is a large chunk of it. Loopy constructions on here are reminiscent of Royal Trux at their most crazed. Yes things are that unhinged. Melodies do actually exist, just barely able to cling onto the pseudo structure that holds these pieces together. Skronk is the best definition of this kind of sound.

Two words are all I really need here: starkly gorgeous. DeRosa plays folk-influenced indie pop that owes as much to Leonard Cohen as Red House Painters but more aptly resembles the latter. DeRosa plays all the instruments on this release - except for cello on two songs - & what you get is quiet, contemplative folksy music that is stark in its crisp, pure acoustic guitar & soft drumming and gorgeous in DeRosa’s rich, emotive vocals.

Shane de Leon (Miss Massive Snowflake) is back to Silber with his long time friend Jamie Smith (Danghead) & together they are Dusty Tears. Recorded by Smith when de Leon was on a tour stop for Miss Massive Snowflake, Internet Hits really captures one of the great things the 5 in 5 series can do. You have an afternoon of downtime as a musician on tour? Hang out with a pal & make something. Part punk, part lo-fi pop, & part experimental streams of consciousness, this pretty much captures how a mind works after long drives, sleeping in the van, & living the rock & roll daydream.

For Nighttime Tides, Electric Bird Noise presents a soundtrack for the ocean rolling in. Calming, soothing, repetitive, lulling, but hinting at a sleeping power of destruction. Will tonight be the night the waves crush coastal towns while we sleep? While we’re dreaming do we even care if we’re destroyed or somehow saved by the creatures of the deep? As long as a guitar string can still create soothing melodies it doesn’t matter if it’s underwater….

Electric Bird Noise: The Silber Sessions Electric Bird Noise - The Silber Sessions
CD Album 2011 | Silber 095
13 tracks, 31 minutes
$12 ($18 international, $5 download (320 kbps, ~66 megs))
It's always refreshing to hear music on the Silber label. In a world where there are too many generic predictable artists, this label continues providing solid, substantial, unique music that will stand the test of time. The Silber Sessions is the fifth full-length release from Electric Bird Noise...a recording project driven by the songwriting skills of Brian Lea McKenzie. This album presents various rare and unreleased recordings by the band culled from the past decade. But instead of coming across like a bunch of random pieces with varying sound quality, the album is surprisingly cohesive. It's hard to compare and contrast this album because McKenzie's music doesn't really sound like any other specific artists. Thirteen ultra-creative cuts here...and they all have something credible to offer. Our favorite elusive artsy cuts include "Trouble at the Hayworth House," "Christmas With Reilly," "February 23rd," and "Fall of the World Trade Center." We could spin this one for months and never tire of these songs. TOP PICK.
~ Babysue

Finally Electric Bird Noise is officially on Silber with the cinematic loopscapes & guitar drone that make them famous.  The Silber Sessions collects ten years of compilation appearances & spans the shifts & changes in sound from over the past decade.

Listen on Silber | Listen on Bandcamp | Listen on Spotify
Internecine Vampires is Luka Fisher's longest EP to date. This record is a continuation of Fisher's last two records Sleep Gallery & Mind Drone Business. This release is a free wheeling exploration of un-winnable situations & social conflict that drew inspiration from everything from chess, Star Trek, & Timothy Leary to considering the ways in which social groups too often fail to connect in meaningful ways. Fisher was also thinking about how queer & trans individuals are too often placed in the unwinnable situation of being evaluated on their ability to "pass" & considered inauthentic in relation to the "authentic" dominant culture. Rather than repeat these moves ad nauseam we need to imagine new games & new ways of being. The unwinnable situation is an invitation to redefine the terms of success; to imagine different ways of being & of relating to the world & those around you; to reject simple binaries & to reject the internecine vampires that lurk within ourselves & our culture. Individuals are meant to be recognized as just that, individuals. Think on & drone on.

Based in Warsaw, Poland Fullness Off Lack is a solo project of Mat Gut (predominantly a guitarist, but he also sings & plays bass for FOL). Across its 8 tracks, The Sad Sea proves to be a tangibly executed, cinemascope soundscape to an unmade film - its dulcet tones narrating a story of suffering, solitariness, anxiety & deep pensiveness but with a shimmering veneer of hope that prevails throughout. If you are after top-draw ‘real’ post-rock that shuns the immediacy of more commercially minded bands in favour of a brand of subtle progression that has melancholic & morose characteristics deeply intertwined within its rich sonic texture, then The Sad Sea is for you.

The ultimate test of a drone record is if it stands up to both passive and active listening. If I can find the record as enthralling when I listen to it at work as it is when I drift off to sleep, then that's some good drone. Lullaby meets both of those criteria, and then some.

The best release yet on Silber Records. The music is sweeping, ethereal, majestic, and mentally absorbing. ...the compositions on this album are amazingly uplifting emotionally and very intense in a restrained manner. One of the most beautiful electronic masterpieces we have heard in years. Wendy Carlos would be proud. This is a MUST HAVE.

Led by Rowland Yeargan, Konbanwa is a project of loose composition & lots of improvisation. On Live Flaying Yeargan asked collaborators to show up with cymbals & like-minded instruments (including glockenspiel, Tibetan bowls, & thunder tubes) while Yeargan himself played simple synthesizer, floor tom, & cymbal. Collaborators included Brian John Mitchell, Bryce Eiman, Armani Mavinga, Will Bridges, Chris Acker, Aya McGee, Tyler Billman, Andrew Harper, Sarah Dakin, & Keith Aazami. The result is a sound that mixes world music with no wave, eastern hypnotics with noise, drone with gamelan. Let the sonic waves shimmer over you.

Moodring is centered around Rollerball's Monte Allen & Mae Starr.  While it’s easy to hear that Moodring is awesome, other words to describe them are a bit harder to come by.  The presence of piano & clarinet give a free post-jazz flavor.  Mae Starr’s ghostly vocals sound like the lounge music on a sinking ship.  The deep groove jams sink in to form some kind of modern American gamelan sound.  The music is so raw & infectious & immediate that it feels more proto-everything than post-anything.  So just soak it in & sink into the doom.

Northern Valentine is husband & wife Robert & Amy Brown along with friends who join them from time to time. They have been writing & recording music since 1997 & have released material previously on acclaimed label Gears of Sand as well as on their own label Baresound.  We are glad to have them added to the Silber roster. They are from Philadephia, Pennsylvania & they love to play live shows. The clear field recordings are a unique combination of elements of all three projects. You hear the loops & aggression of Remora’s guitar work, Northern Valentine’s ambient shimmering glacial guitars, & slicnaton’s orchestrated glitch & deep bass tones. While hearing all three individual musicians, it still is clearly a collaboration of the three rather than one of the projects with two special guests; it is a unique sound of its own.

The compositions on the curiously titled Vardøgr are accidental, strange, eerie, sparse, and definitely not what the average person would consider music to be. We're always up for a challenge... and we openly embrace the idea of noise and sound presented as music. Accordingly, we find this album to be perplexing and genuine...

$8 ($10 international, $5 download (256 kbps, ~85 megs))
Clouds of fuzzed guitar vapor forms into shapes & spaces. Spin and circle one another like little planets like sonic dust motes blow around the room. Often brings to mind Roy Montgomery, but Aldrich is not so metaphysical as Roy; he’s more nervous, noisy, less formulaic, & far too tense to trance-out & he’s a bit more crazy maybe...
~ Dream Magazine

Limited to 200 signed and numbered copies, this release compiles five years of obscure & hard to locate material. This is a personal & understated collection trancey post-garage guitar works. Stripped down & laced with something you've yet to try, this is one of the more interesting excursions into neo-psychedelia out there. This band is beauty personified. Their music is ethereal and swirly, much like Cocteau Twins and Bel Canto. Eliza Brown’s voice captivates and entrances. The guitars are swirly and chimey while the rhythm section chugs along quite contently. . . . This band has been around for a few years and has seen many lineup changes. I do feel this combination of musicians is indeed the strongest they’ve had & I hope they continue to make music as impressive as this in their current configuration.

This American band/artist as the information is minimal reflect this in the music which is appropriately minimal & experimental. Waves of distortion fed through reverb effects drone through the ether like a passing tank. These other worldly murmurs are in stark contrast to the sub Stooges riffs that are processed out of all recognition on some occasions. Structured tracks with some vocals are the shade to the more chaotic soundscapes, the pitch darkness. A mixture of a psychedelic feel set against a more extreme sound manipulation, like Pink Floyd meets Merzbow.

At the request of Bryce Clayton Eiman, Remora prepared a piece for the Guitar Antiheroes 919 Noise Showcase on May 12, 2009. The showcase had performers pushing the idea of how to approach the guitar as an instrument. For Remora’s performance to push the sound to the next level from a standard Remora show (which is already often filled with guitar noise), Brian John Mitchell (Remora) boosted the sound to the next level by using five guitars, a bass, & four amplifiers instead of the standard single guitar & amp. The additional guitars were staged around the main amplifier to act as drone instruments. Probably the loudest Remora show ever (reports are it was heard clearly a block away) & often on the cusp of losing control of the wave of sound, the piece ended with Mitchell nearly throwing up from the volume exposure. Still the music somehow ends up as soothing as it is menacing.

This is a lot different to anything else I’ve heard by Remora. The guitars have largely been jettisoned in favour of early eighties analogue synthesisers. Mecha is a concept album put together by Remora (aka Silber head-honcho Brian John Mitchell) with an accompanying comic. It’s a tale of a dystopian future of robot freedom fighters in the grand DC/Marvel tradition.

Remora is the main alias of Silber Records honcho Brian John Mitchell. In 15 years, the man has cover a lot of ground, and Scars Bring Hope, while featuring only new material, kind of sums up past experiences. Inside you will find post-apocalyptic folk songs, drones, and electronic music. Helped by Electric Bird Noise’s Brian Lee McKenzie, who dragged him out of the bedroom and into a proper recording studio, Remora delivers an album more definitive-sounding than usual, a good point of entry into his universe – a dark, fallen universe with very little hope left.

Remora - songs i sing Remora - songs i sing
CD EP 2007 | North Pole 005
13 tracks, 16 minutes, plus 1 video
$9
He sings sometimes in a Townes Van Zandt-style troubadour’s voice (“I Called Your Mom”), sometimes the same way he sings Remora’s usual song-drones, sometimes demonic (“Heartworms”), and sometimes in a wicked-fast, odd way (the shortest songs, generally). All in all, this album comes off like a joke/experiment, but it’s also hard to shake, resembling as it does the ghosts of voices past, strung together as one. Think of exorcisms, of spirits singing through people, but also those goofy little ditties we all sing to our loved ones, in the moment.
~ Dave Heaton, erasing clouds

Well, here is a release you thought would never exist. For those of you who have not seen Remora live in the past two years (or gotten personal phone messages), this side of Remora is completely unknown.  On this release Remora goes a cappella in the songs from the live show done while tuning guitar.  Sometimes comedic, sometimes spiritual, & occasionally poignant.  This was predominantly recorded by Jessica Bailiff during Remora’s 2006 spring tour & includes covers of “We Will Fall” (The Stooges), “Heartworms” (Coil), “Sores” (Rollerball), & a passage from Job.  Beautiful hand letter-pressed artwork by Shane Sauers & a video for “Sores” also by Mister Sauers.  If Devo 2.0 was the weirdest thing in your collection, this is for you!

When was the last time you listened to something experimental, enjoyed it, & understood it? I'm usually left to contemplate what just abused my eardrums, with little consideration for whether the music actually meant something. Unlike many other experimental albums, Behind the Barber won't bore you with too much drone or leave you cringing in anticipation of your next aural flogging; Rollerball has decisive control over its music and presents it in an interesting way. They'll lull you into a state of relaxation, but inject appropriate doses of musical excitement along the way. It's good to hear them returning to form after almost dropping off the map.

Catholic Paws/Catholic Pause has all the elements that make a Rollerball album so original, the catchy pop songs with tints of goth, the jazz maelstroms & the ambient whimpers. Experimenting. Collaborating.   Beautiful music that creates emotion & energy.

I haven't yet decided if Rollerball's Einäugige Kirsche ("one-eyed cherry") is sexy in any conventional sense of the term. It's noisy as hell, I know that: junkheap jazz marked by skronking horns and clattering percussion. Whoever you could get onto the kitchen floor with this dark beauty has mental problems. But don't let it stop you from trying.

This album is staggering in its creativity even though it's probably the most pop-focused of Rollerball's releases. They bring the funk influence which has always been lurking, closer to the fore quite tastefully, with propulsive drums and full-bodied bass inspiring movement, but the highlight of their music is definitely the super-catchy lyrics and melodies.
~ Steve Smith, Brainwashed

Real Hair, Rollerball's ninth full-length release, follows a more direct path than any of the band's previous albums. By zeroing in on actual songs Rollerball captures the essence of their live sound more here than on any previous release.

Rollerball - Trail of the Butter Yeti
CD Album 2001 | Roadcone 030
11 tracks, 46 minutes

One cannot tell if they resemble the pop band that got turned onto drugs midway through the sessions, or the avant-noise band that got turned on to hooks. Either way, Yeti is a willfully stubborn album, at times catchy; at times utterly trance-inducing, occasionally indulgent, but mostly enveloping. Perfectly, maddeningly scattershot.:: Brent Sirota, Pitchfork

She has a pretty pixie voice, & she whispers & sings in tune, with a blend of seduction & childish naivete - tone-wise, not lyric-wise, as her lyrics are efficient & poetic. June accompanies herself simply at the acoustic guitar. Honest & enjoyable. Some of these melodies will etch their path in my brain after only two listens I’m sure.

The music in itself it is rather simple in its making, an acoustic guitar and the female voice with rather minimal keyboard accompaniments that adds a dreamlike atmosphere, surreal and mysterious while the power of the music captivates the listener not by force but by some sort of strange seduction and gentle invitation. The work centres the compositions in the delicate flow of the voice, which is utterly feminine in sonority, like the kind of singing a fairy could do while in loneliness and melancholy.

Small Life Form started as a studio project of sound exploration in 1998 & became a live project in 2007 focusing on electro-acoustics & super simple synthesizers. Fragments collects studio recordings from 2012-2014 dominated by the live rig of the era complimented by a few computer sound sculptures ("slow silence", "so sincere", "BPM65", "fluorescent", "buzz"). The stage is set with "something organic to service the machine" inspired by Harlan Ellison's short story "I Have No Mouth, & I Must Scream" for a slab of post-apocalyptic sci-fi doom drone. After mankind has fallen, sound still needs to be explored.

Listen on Silber | Listen on Bandcamp | Listen on Spotify
Small Life Form returns for Christmas with an EP of electroacoustics & cheap synths built into sonic walls. The first two pieces ("Days Late" & "A Ride Home") are built from a concept Small Life Form has been trying to bring to fruition for four years, using an optical theremin & Christmas tree lights. Why did it take four years? Because the Christmas tree lights were making the theremin make an unpleasantly high-pitched noise & it took a long time to figure out how to change that. In the end the answer was putting pieces of a broken beer bottle over the optical sensor. "Days Late" takes the theremin & layers on cheap synths to make a piece typical of the Small Life Form live set while "A Ride Home" takes just the theremin & slows it down as something to something meditative. "A Request from Dad" is a piece written at the request of Bryce Eiman for 919Noise's Christmas Showcase based on some recent shows featuring music boxes & the only sound sources are music boxes run through SLF's standard effect rig. So sit back & let the aggressive ambient ring in your holidays.

When the time came to make a soundtrack to the Lost Kisses cartoons, Small Life Form’s brand of electro acoustics & aggressive ambient seemed like a great fit for the stories. The music is loop driven & sometimes barely noticed & at other times feels like a laser beam straight to the brain threatening to completely wash it clean. The soundtrack to an emotional acid trip - not necessarily positive or negative or menacing or soothing, but very physically present.
The instruments used are the standards of the recent live Small Life Form shows including copper pipe, triangles, melodica, pitch pipe, harmonica, microphone feedback, & voice all washed & sculpted with distortion, reverb, & delay.
Some of the pieces are shorter or longer than on the Lost Kisses DVD (adjusted for the length of the cartoons) & also included are the pieces for the menu pages that were eventually cut from the release.
If you dig the soundtrack make sure to check out the DVD to get the rest of the story.

Small Life Form’s ‘We Shall Be One’ is the sound of biology gone astray. Unable to focus on melody or any form of progression it is reminiscent of tiny microorganisms. The surreal quality of these songs is quite disturbing at times. By using something so abstract it moves beyond mere ambience or noise into an entirely different field of sound. Elements within the sound itself reappear multiple times creating a fractured sense of theme. Through the process of evolution the sounds merge to build a larger greater creature.

The compositions on this album are dreamy & hypnotic. They were not recorded for the purpose of making money nor were they made to entertain the general population. Vanflower experiments with her voice & with sounds. The resulting recordings reflect her disregard for fame & fortune. Thus, while Fire-Filled Heart may be a commercial disaster...artistically it is a resounding success. Strangely distant & unfamiliar territory. EXCELLENT.

Though it's been hinted at in the past, evidently the timing was right for Mike VanPortfleet of Lycia to release a solo album. This piece is heavily atmospheric and might be a bit disorienting if you go into it expecting to hear A Day In The Stark Corner, which this album is NOT. What this album is, in fact, is brilliant and beautiful. Heavy ambient loops building up atmosphere and tension through the first four tracks. I promise you this, when you reach track 5 "Stellar Buckshot Awaits", you will find yourself in familiar territory. The guitar sound that makes him so recognizeable, and that brilliant voice, are waiting for you. I nearly leapt for joy to hear his brilliant, whispy voice calling from the horizon line. Misery and mastery become one in this incredible album.
~ David Poseidon, Gothic Beauty

Mike VanPortfleet's post-Lycia debut is an ambient album built from the ground up with loop sources & effects into shimmering walls & minimalist soundscapes.  Crystalline harmonic washes resonating from the cold depths of mind & matter.  Glacial rhythms & serenity through fathoms of uncharted seas.  If Brian Eno collaborated with Justin Broadrick it might sound like this.  Majestic & heart breaking.

Lo-fi acoustic shoegazer?  Vlor's two cassette releases combined together.  Lavished was recorded in a raquetball room & Luxate was recorded in Brian's Bedroom. Here's a review of Luxate:
Vlor are a duo consisting of Remora's Brian John Mitchell on guitar & Russell Halasz on guitar & bass. Though they are quite experimental at times, Vlor never stray from their keen pop sensibilities on this excellent cassette release. Though very lo-fi -- most of the songs here were recorded in one take using a hand held recorder -- it's not hard to find the passion in these dark, enchanting instrumentals. Fans of Flying Saucer Attack, especially the early stuff, would probably dig Luxate.

Six-Winged is a terrific album that flits from style to style, but manages to hang together perfectly. Even the book ending tracks, ostensibly two versions of the same thing, sound nothing like each other. The first a delicate, fragile whisper of a song, the second straying into Galaxie 500 territory. It shows that surprise and variety needn’t be at the expense of consistency and flow.

~ Beach Sloth

Dan West came to us through his collaborations with Azalia Snail under the name LoveyDove. On Expression Compression he combines 1980s noise rock with Sun Ra styled jazz.

The Wet Teens: Let It Pee The Wet Teens - Let It Pee
MP3 Album 2010 | Silber 088
7 tracks, 20 minutes

With an album title like "Let it Pee" how could you not be intrigued? Their lyrics are explicit, their guitar lines intense, their drum beats driving, and we're sure their live show would be invigorating.  Together since 2004, but influenced by music from 30 plus years ago, we're not really sure what their end goal may be, but they've creatively revived an era.
~ New Band Daily

Okay, I know what you're thinking, "What's a glam punk band doing on Silber?"  Well, when good friends make good music, you feel a need to make it heard.  Over the top & hyper-sexualized rock & roll brought back to life &, much like Frankenstein's Monster, is stronger & more intense than before it died.

P. D. Wilder, ex-Hotel Hotel, continues in the age-old tradition of hillbilly beardos playing ambient drone music solo armed with a guitar & a dozen pedals. Now a father, Wilder recorded much of “remember to remind me” during the nine months before his son’s birth. A reflection & meditation on life with change during the anticipation of change. Birth, life, death, birth, always changing always moving forward, always the same – yet always building & changing, drone is forever.

~ Somewhere Cold

For those not in the know, for eighteen years now Yellow6 has been putting out an annual Christmas series collecting unreleased & rare recordings from over the year that haven't been on other releases. It's always a treat as you get to hear sides of Yellow6 that might not fit so neatly on an album release. This year we have some pieces more sparse & minimal than you often think of Yellow6 being, closer to the sound track of an american desert than a cavern drenched with echo. It's so easy to get lost in place & space & time with this collection, is it 1916 or 2016? Does it matter? Drone on!

Whenever you reach a milestone, it's natural to reflect. Reflect on the past, your achievements, the possible futures. In 1998 the first Yellow6 record was released, two sides of a 7" single totaling about nine minutes of music. Twenty years on, comes Reflect - a set of thirty-two pieces & five & a half hours of music. Not a retrospective, best of, or greatest hits that you would expect to mark this anniversary, but essentially five albums worth of new music. For long time fans, Reflect showcases the process & creativity of Yellow6, for newcomers it's a perfect opportunity to here a project continuing to explore & find new sounds after two decades.

QRD - The Guitarists Various ArtistsQRD - The Guitarists
MP3 compilation 2014 | Silber 154
55 tracks, 231 minutes
$20 (320 kbps, ~500 megs (includes 58 page digital booklet & 2388 page ebook))
55 tracks of guitar madness contributed by the interviewees (231 minutes y’all), with sweet shreds by the likes of Aidan Baker (Nadja), Alan Sparhawk (Low), Bill Horist (Master Musicians of Bukake), and a whole host of others.
Tiny Mix Tapes

In 2010 QRD started a series of interviews with guitar players after spending two years coming up with 58 questions about approaches & techniques of playing, & since it's QRD all the guitarists were a bit out of the mainstream.  After ten sets of interviews it was time to bundle everything together & ask the guitarists if they had some sound to contribute.  So we ended up with something pretty massive.  55 tracks of guitarists pushing their instruments & rigs.  A 50+ page digital booklet.  A 2388 page ebook of interviews with guitarists.  I like to think I went all out on this.  I feel like there’s no justice in mentioning individual contributors & barely even genres.  The pieces flow from ambient to folk to drone to jazz to metal to noise & back around several times in its nearly 4 hour run time.  So sit back & relax & drone out & bliss out & freak out a good chunk of your day away.

Guitarists appearing on the compilation:
Ian McPhedran of Ostrich Tuning, Jun Minowa of Gargle & Yawning, Alan Sparhawk of Low, Aidan Baker of Nadja, Michael Walton of mwvm, Mason Jones of Numinous Eye, Gavin MacArthur of Schlong, Brandon W Pittman of when the word was (((sound))), Evgeny Zheyda of Thorn1, Robert Brown of Northern Valentine, PD Wilder of Hotel Hotel, Ashkelon Sain of Trance to the Sun, Invisible Elephant, Andras Fekete of Boat Burning, David M Birchall of Kalbakken, Brian Elyo of mobdividual, Francesco Brasini, Jason LaFarge of Pants Exploder, Brian Lea McKenzie of Electric Bird Noise, Azalia Snail, Andrea Vascellari of Lullabier & Firetail, Eric Quach of thisquietarmy, Kyle Arthur Miller of Haunter, Martin Newman of Plumerai & Goddakk, Joshua Heinrich of fornever, Charles Rice Goff III, Bret Harold Hart, Dave Halverson of Trance Lucid, Evan Peta, Jim Walker of Tim and Jim & JVA, John Trubee, Jon Attwood of Yellow6, Brian John Mitchell of Remora, Nathan Amundson of Rivulets, Gary Murray, Bill Horist of Master Musicians of Bukkake, TAM, Julien Ottavi, Tony Sagger of DrugsDragons, Jean D.L., Robert Poss of Band of Susans, Russ Stedman, Stef Ketteringham of Shield Your Eyes, Eric Hausmann, Zachary Corsa & Denny Corsa of Lost Trail, Michael A. Here at Silber, mothers have always had a special place in our heart.  So we’re happy to finally get a compilation together to pay a little bit of the tribute mothers are so dearly due.
Everyone has a different style of song to show their love from heavy metal (Wrong Brothers) to post-rock (Glissade, Electric Bird Noise) to noise (Moral Crayfish) to simply acoustic guitar (Remora).  While most went the instrumental route, the songs with vocals by Plumerai & Miss Massive Snowflake show the tongue-in-cheek comedy that we all use to tell our moms we love them.

Noise, beats, slowcore, found sounds, guitar walls, & occasionally things that could pass for rock & roll.

~ pindrops and cathedral bells

Back when Brian John Mitchell was a pre-teen, he read a story by H.P. Lovecraft which told of someone using music to scare monsters away. Fifteen years later, Zann is released. From harsh ambient noise, to achingly beautiful minimalist works, to lo-fi bedroom tapes, & the list goes on. Exclusive tracks by: Small Life Form (w/Jarboe), Remora, Trance to the Sun, Aarktica, dA Sebasstian (of Kill Switch…Klick), Drekka, SubArachnoid Space, Tore Boe, Clang Quartet, pFrenz-C, Rollerball, Alchemia, Pineal Ventana, The Pulling Kiss, Plumerai, Jerry Blue, & The Unquiet Void. Cover art by Kimberlee Traub.
