When I wake up again it’s night & there’s hardly any light in the cell.
The only light is from a candle a hundred feet down the hallway.
I can hear the guard’s deep steady breathing & I know he’s asleep.
I check the bars & one of them is bent enough that I can fit my head
through, so I slowly & quietly pull my entire body through the gap.
I choke the guard until I’m sure he’ll be out a few minutes & I put
on his rags & go out into the city. The city’s dark & quiet.
It’s quieter here than outside of the city, there aren’t any bird or insect
noises. I can’t tell where the gates are from here, so I just sit
in an alley waiting a few hours for the sun to come up.
