Vlor is an improv guitar project somewhere between folk & punk rock. acoustic shoe-gazer? "twelve piercing wounds filled with honey?" some kind of instrumental moody pop that some people like. maybe the soundtrack to driving through deserted towns on rural highways late at night.
reviews of Luxate:
"My tape player sits underneath the table & this is the first music
that sounds at home there."
-- Alan Sparhawk (Low)
"A duo of Russell Halasz (guitar/bass) & Brian John Mitchell (guitar).
They play strange instrumental tracks from the sad melancholic mood
through psychedelia to experimental noise & back. Every song is a different
one. They are monotonous, but short & well made-up, so do not turn
to boredom....very very graceful. Check it out if you are interested in
that kind of music."
-- Vizler Tibor (Straight Edge magazine(Hungary))
“Vlor are a duo consisting of Remora's Brian John Mitchell on guitar
& Russell Halasz on guitar & bass. Though they are quite experimental
at times, Vlor never stray from their keen pop sensibilities on this excellent
cassette release. Though very lo-fi -- most of the songs here were recorded
in one take using a hand held recorder -- it's not hard to find the passion
in these dark, enchanting instrumentals. Fans of Flying Saucer Attack,
especially the early stuff, would probably dig Luxate.”
-- Ben Szporluk (Vendetta magazine)
“The side project of Brian John Mitchell (Remora), where he works with
Russell Halasz on guitar/bass. A more 'experimental' sounding little gem,
soft noise & absurdities that stretch as the minutes clock by. 'Most
tracks recorded in one take using a hand held cassette recorder' says much.
That doesn’t have to make it good, but this is. Unpretentious playing
around with sounds, creating some sharp shivering turmoils.”
-- Tore Boe (Origami Republika)
"Vlor is like an unmade bed... the best kind to sleep in after a long
shift at the textile plant...."
Eric Cooley (faith & disease)
reviews of Vlor’s first cassette Lavished:
"This is an unpretentious short tape from our ally Brian John Mitchell,
editor of the zine QRD & the man behind Remora (who appear on various
tapes & compilations we've put out over the last year). As I understand
it, this is a side-project of his, where Russell Halasz & Brian explore
the various atmospheres of highly repetitive acoustic guitar sketches.
Edging to the anonymous this tape is just one of those I like to spin in
the background doing trivial stuff like having a coffee or writing this
e-zine."
-- Tore Boe (Origami Republika)
"low-fi experimental ethereal: There is some beautiful experimental
guitar work on Lavished, but the intentional low fidelity detracts from
my enjoyment of the songs. The fuzziness & rawness of this style
does give the music some character, but I'd still prefer to be in the room
with the band instead of having to listen through the wall."
-- Octavia (Outburn magazine)
