Pure Tone Audiometry is Aarktica's most involved work yet, approaching the balance between "drone" and "song." Although the overall tone is consistent and dreamlike, the content within is as varied as DeRosa's personality, combining gentle lullabies with jagged atonalism, string trios with white noise guitars, and feverish percussion overtop sedate drones.

The title track is sickeningly sweet but with a morbid edge, as the narrator falls for a girl like an acrobat who plummets from the wire. Barnes sings about her picking up his limbs and putting them back in their sockets before the vultures come and it's still the sweetest song about love I've heard this year.

Irving plays his home-designed percussion megalith called "the Crutch" (a jumble of saw blade, broken cymbal, office stapler, & various other noisemakers) while hopping around in spiritual rapture and, all the while, drawing directly directly on events in the life of Christ. This could be a genuinely fascinating, groundbreaking mix of influences, and the best on The Separation of Church and Hate prove that religious conviction and the experiments of Irving's heroes (Throbbing Gristle, This Heat) can coexist with surprising fluidity.

Two words are all I really need here: starkly gorgeous. DeRosa plays folk-influenced indie pop that owes as much to Leonard Cohen as Red House Painters but more aptly resembles the latter. DeRosa plays all the instruments on this release - except for cello on two songs - & what you get is quiet, contemplative folksy music that is stark in its crisp, pure acoustic guitar & soft drumming and gorgeous in DeRosa’s rich, emotive vocals.

It was a radio broadcast to promote the Elegy drone festival in honor of Michael Lenz (& a portion of the proceeds go to a scholarship fund in his honor). The performers are Jessica Bailiff, Ryley Fogg, Jesse Beacom, Michael Anderson (Drekka, Turn Pale), Marc Gartman, Brian John Mitchell (Remora, Small Life Form), & Alan Sparhawk (Low).

Minimalist drone, aggressive ambient, electro-acoustic, organic, whatever you call it to describe it doesn’t change this from being a great record. These are all instrumentals & all great. I want to listen to this album while driving through Nebraska. Very soothing, built from guitars & synthesizers with very little percussion. Anyone who likes pieces better than songs should buy this.

The first Remora release to get much attention. Our favorite review of it is:
This American band/artist as the information is minimal reflect this in the music which is appropriately minimal & experimental. Waves of distortion fed through reverb effects drone through the ether like a passing tank. These other worldly murmurs are in stark contrast to the sub Stooges riffs that are processed out of all recognition on some occasions. Structured tracks with some vocals are the shade to the more chaotic soundscapes, the pitch darkness. A mixture of a psychedelic feel set against a more extreme sound manipulation, like Pink Floyd meets Merzbow.
